Go and sow the dragon’s teeth!
See what springs up underneath –
A crop of hoplites fully armed!
Now the sower is alarmed!
First the helmets push through soil
Then the breastplates with hard moil
Each brawny arm breaks through the clod
Growing quickly from the sod
Holding weapons – and their spears
A waving forrest soon appears.
What ho! Like Jason shall you kill
Soldiers who spring forth where you till?
How will you kill them? Magic charms
Protect such mystic men-at-arms.
Our fears we sow like dragon’s teeth.
Our hates will ripen underneath.
We reap our bitternesses armed
For such a harvest: be alarmed!
