Upon this Rock

Burning church

“Upon this rock I’ll build my church” – You said. “The gates of hell
“Will never stand against it.” On these words of Yours I dwell.
For I look around about me: and the sickly church I see
Makes Your statement quite surprising. And a present mystery.

For “the church”: is it still Yours? What does “church” still have to do
With Your gospel, Truth, or holiness? With God? Or even You?
When Your Word is disregarded for the vanities of men?
So why don’t You simply scrap “the church” and start over again?

Perhaps You shall redeem the church and cleanse it with Your flame.
To glorify Your Father and bring honour to Your Name.
And remove all unrighteous men. Will any then be left?
Or will the church be rudderless, of leaders all bereft?

So if the gates of hell will never stand against Your church
I suppose You shall ensure it. You’ll refine it by Your search
Exposing every hidden sin to burn them on your pyre
And those believing they’re secure will suffer from Your ire.
