Dutt’s Buttoo


Another great poetry must read includes Dutt‘s Buttoo: part of her Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan collection.

Dutt’s poetry transports the reader into the land of myth and legend: to walk in fancy through the very heart of the Indian subcontinent. Her narrative poems are often set against the backdrop of the epic Mahābhārata: and Buttoo is no exception.

  • How can a humble peasant-boy – against the obstacles of crippling poverty and the strict taboos of caste – to succeed in fulfilling his dream: to became a skilled warrior to fight under his Pandava hero – Arjuna?
